How can you choose the right grinding for your coffee machine?

Types of coffee grinding

As we have already explained in one of our previous articles, the grinding process is fundamental to get the best supplied coffee.

Here below there are the main types of grinding that are available in the market with the coffee quality that they can offer.

Fine grinding

The fine grinding is essential for espresso, because it allows a good extraction of oils and aroma during the short time lapse of contact between the hot water and the coffee. This grain size is similar to a partially rough flour and it is perfect for home and professional espresso machines because if the grinding should be too much fine, the water couldn’t flow in the right way and the coffee aroma could be altered.

Coarse grinding

It is the best for extraction methods that take a longer time. The coarse grinding is similar to coarse salt. The water flows through the coffee and aroma is extracted without being too much bitter.

The importance of the right grinding

Effect on the coffee taste

The correct coffee grinding is fundamental to get the best aromatic potential of the coffee grains

If the grinding is too fine or coarse, it can alter the coffee taste, affecting its extraction while a good granulometry allows an extraction balanced in sweetness, acidity and aroma.

Espresso extraction

For espresso, a fine grinding is essential for a thick cream and a rich taste.

It is important to regulate the grinding according to the time lapse of contact of water with coffee in order to avoid getting a too acid or bitter coffee.

Every country has its own grinding

The coffee grinding changes according to the traditions and tastes of every country.

In Italy, the fine grinding is fundamental for a good espresso while in France a medium grinding is preferred.  In the USA the filter coffee needs a coarser grinding for the largely used drip coffee machines.

In Turkey the grinding is so fine to look like a powder ad it is required for Turkish coffee that is boiled without filtration.  Flymax has been producing coffee machines for the traditional Turkish coffee supply for many years.

In Japan the coffee is supplied by a syphon grinding that must have a specific compactness for its system of extraction.

Every region has developed specific systems of grinding with following different tastes and aroma.

The choice of the right grinding for your own coffee machine is fundamental in order to allow you and any coffee lover to get the most tasteful experience.

The coffee taste, aroma and quality depend on the granulometry.

The understanding of the right grinding according to the used coffee supply method is fundamental to exploit the aroma of the coffee grains.

You may need either a fine grinding for a creamy and tasty espresso or a coarse grinding but in both cases the precision and the capacity of adapting to the used supply method are the most precious rule to learn.

Besides the grinding typology choice, the right choice of the grinder and its regular maintenance are also very important to get the best and the most lasting results.
